How to check your phone’s IMEI number (and why you need it)

The IMEI is a 15-digit number that identifies your phone, a bit like a chassis number for a car. You need it to register a phone with PTA, to block a lost phone and to check a used phone before you pay.
Three ways to find it
- Dial the code. Open the dialler and type
*#06#. The IMEI appears on screen. This works on almost every phone and shows the number the phone itself reports. - Look in Settings. On Android, look for About phone and then IMEI (you may need to open a status or SIM section). On iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and scroll down.
- Look at the box or the phone. The retail box has a sticker with the IMEI. Some phones also print it on the SIM tray or the back, and some show it on a label under the battery cover.
Dual SIM phones have two numbers
A phone with two SIM slots has two IMEIs, one per slot. Note both. PTA checks and blocking use the IMEI, so you may need to enter both.
What the IMEI is used for
- PTA registration and approval checks. See how to check if a phone is PTA approved and how to register a phone with PTA.
- Blocking a lost or stolen phone. Keep a copy somewhere safe, away from the phone. See how to block a lost or stolen phone.
- Warranty claims. Shops and service centres ask for it.
- Checking a used phone. Compare the number from
*#06#with the box and with the Settings screen. If they do not match, walk away. More in buying a used phone in Pakistan.
Keep it private
Do not post your IMEI publicly. Share it only with the operator, PTA or the shop that is helping you.
Do this today
Dial *#06#, take a screenshot, and store it in a note or email to yourself. If the phone is ever lost, you will have the number ready.
