How to use your phone as a webcam

Most phones have a far better camera than a laptop’s built-in one. You can use it for video calls, lessons or streaming.
Option 1: Android over USB
Many recent Android phones can act as a webcam directly.
- Connect the phone to the computer with a USB cable.
- Pull down the notification shade and tap the USB notification.
- Look for a Webcam option and choose it.
- On the computer, open your calling app and select the phone as the camera.
This depends on the phone and the Android version. If you do not see a Webcam option, use an app (below).
Option 2: iPhone with a Mac
Recent iPhones and Macs can work together as Continuity Camera. The two devices need to be signed in to the same Apple account, near each other, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on. On the Mac, choose the iPhone as the camera in your calling app.
Option 3: a webcam app
Apps from trusted makers can turn a phone into a webcam on Windows or Mac, over USB or Wi-Fi. Install the app on both phone and computer, follow the pairing steps, then pick the phone as the camera. Use only well-known apps, and read what permissions they ask for.
Tips for a good picture
- Prop the phone up at eye level with a stand or a pile of books. Use landscape mode.
- Light your face from the front, such as a window or a lamp, and not from behind.
- Clean the lens with a soft cloth.
- Keep it plugged in. Video drains the battery fast, and a charged, cool phone works better: see how to make your phone battery last longer.
- Silence the phone so calls and alerts do not interrupt.
Privacy checklist
- Use apps only from official stores and well-known developers.
- Stop the app when you finish, and check that the camera is not left on.
- Do not give an app more permissions than it needs.
