ChatGPT can now make animated GIFs. OpenAI rolled out the feature on November 4 as part of its new Images 2.6 update. Users simply describe what they want, or upload a photo, and ChatGPT animates it into a looping GIF.
Before this, there was no native one-step route from a prompt to a finished GIF inside the chatbot. Creating one meant opening separate editing software, stitching frames together manually, or using a dedicated tool entirely outside the conversation.
That entire process now happens inside a single chat window. Moreover, it goes beyond just generating the animation. After creation, users can adjust the playback speed, inspect individual frames, revise specific frames they dislike, and share the finished result. Essentially, ChatGPT becomes both the creator and the editor in one step.

The update is rolling out to all ChatGPT and Codex users globally. It works across web, desktop, and mobile apps regardless of subscription tier.
However, GIFs are just the flashiest part of the release. Images 2.6 also introduces persistent reference images, which means ChatGPT can now remember and reuse visual elements across a conversation. Additionally, OpenAI claims the update generates images 50% faster overall. That speed boost matters at scale, since the platform now produces over 4 billion images per week across all its products.
On the developer side, two new API models ship alongside the consumer update. GPT-Image-2.6 Flare handles speed-focused tasks and can produce an image in as little as six seconds on low-quality settings. Meanwhile, GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst targets higher visual quality with greater consistency across edits. Notably, Sunburst also adds image markup and SVG export for developers who need precise editing controls.
The groundwork for this launch appeared in OpenAI’s code before the consumer announcement. On November 3, the company merged a pull request in its Codex repository enabling GIF output through the Images API. Consequently, developers had a one-day head start before the public rollout.
This release builds on steady momentum in OpenAI’s image generation roadmap. Images 2.5 launched on September 8 and halved generation latency. Before that, GPT Image 2 introduced reasoning-based generation in April. Together, these updates mark a clear trajectory: OpenAI is turning ChatGPT from a text-first tool into a full creative platform, one format at a time.
For social media managers, marketers, and the internet’s meme economy, native GIF creation inside the world’s most-used chatbot removes real friction. The format remains a staple of online communication, and putting it one prompt away from 900 million weekly users could reshape how casual animation gets made.
