The FSU Seminoles are in the early stages of their head coaching search after firing Mike Norvell on Sunday. While several potential candidates have downplayed their interest in the opening, that is not the case with Jimbo Fisher.
The former FSU head coach has not shied away from expressing his interest in returning to Tallahassee, with former players and fans voicing their support for him on social media. There are just as many fans opposed to his return after his messy exit and failure with the Texas A&M Aggies.
While his interest is apparent, the most important factor is whether or not FSU is interested in bringing him back. A recent report from Warchant's Ira Schoffel and Matt LaSerre seems to indicate that he is not a top candidate and may not even be in the mix at all.
Two sources with knowledge of the situation strongly downplayed the university’s interest in a reunion with Fisher, who was Florida State’s head coach from 2010-17, with one going so far to say he is not expected to be in the running.
Fisher can make a compelling case for why he should be on the short list. He led them to the 2013 national championship, was an excellent recruiter, and has plenty of experience at a major program, something other candidates lack. He also could garner a smaller salary after Texas A&M paid him a $76.8 million buyout, the biggest in college football history. The savings could allow them to invest that money elsewhere, either into the roster or the coaching staff.
It is also easy to make a case against his return. His FSU teams regressed after the national championship, and his exit was not handled well. His time at Texas A&M was not good enough for the amount of resources and investment he received. While they had success on the recruiting trail, he won just nine games twice, and his best season came during the 2020 COVID season.
