Jonas Urbig has not yet become the number one at Bayern Munich this season, but he has been accumulating a great track record of performances so far. However, not everyone is convinced of Urbig, despite being trusted for both Bayern Munich and, recently, the German national team. Uli Hoeneß was recently asked whether he is convinced Jonas Urbig is capable of becoming Bayern’s number one, leading to quite an exchange between himself and the journalist.
“I have absolutely no doubt about it. It’s a very smart decision. Jonas Urbig will get this opportunity. Everyone at FC Bayern is prepared for that. Based on his performance on the pitch and his character, he deserves this chance. Then we’ll see what happens next. He has the ability to make it,” Hoeneß told Welt am Sonntag, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
“Urbig has never been the number one at a world-class club; Neuer’s shoes to fill would be enormous,” the interviewer said.
“So should we spend €50 million on a goalkeeper just because he’s played a few Champions League games and a few know-it-alls are demanding that? Absolutely not,” Hoeneß responded.
It is a perfect response to the journalist in what is truly a ridiculous counterpoint. Without taking a shot at young talent, clubs would be forced to always spend big money on proven talent elsewhere, which would not be financially feasible. Urbig seems up for the challenge and, while there are no guarantees, he is without a doubt the best option at the moment.
