Sharks Keep Sinking, Lose 4-1 to Wild

SAINT PAUL, MINN. — The San Jose Sharks take on the Minnesota Wild at Grand Casino Arena.

Macklin Celebrini scored, but the Sharks lost 4-1 to the Wild.

The San Jose Sharks have lost their sixth of the last seven.

Truly cool how popular Celebrini is. Lower bowl was absolutely packed with Sharks/Celebrini jersey-wearing fans during warmups. Hundreds of people

Period 1

The San Jose Sharks start with the fourth line, hoping to establish their ground game and identity, I think.

4 in: Nurse deflects potential 2-on-1 pass, good work. Celebrini was skating back to recover but would’ve been close.

6 in: Toffoli signals for the stretch pass, Nurse ignores or doesn’t see, goes for the short pass. I think they want more of that. Not ignoring Toffoli haha, I mean more short passes.

Dellandrea penalty: Easy thing is to curse Dellandrea, and he did take the penalty. But comes off a Stenberg turnover in NZ. Stenberg trying to hit speed coming up the middle in Dellandrea, give-and-go, but before he makes the play, puck stripped. Argument to just dump it in and let Dellandrea’s speed get it on forecheck. His 5-on-5 game, like I’ve said, needs work, and I wonder if he’s hitting a little wall right now. Dellandrea also didn’t have to take that penalty, I think, the turnover wasn’t in the most dangerous area.

Graf penalty: Boy, the San Jose Sharks are being tested right now. Two men down for about 1:45.

Kaprizov goal: Eighth-straight game where the Sharks have allowed the first goal. And Wild still have a 1:30 of PP. Question is, how will the Sharks respond to adversity?

8 in: Ostapchuk and Sherwood jump on Kaprizov PP turnover, get out on 2-on-1, Ostapchuk has an in-tight bid. Wallstedt wall. Sharks need one of these to go in, it just seems no one can get a break recently.

9 left: Celebrini back on his one-timer side on PP. Sharks just missing chances, Smith had Stenberg all alone in slot, and Stenberg put puck on wrong side of Toffoli in slot. Just not executing, looks are there if you make the pass.

6 left: Gorgeous Celebrini exit pass through a couple Wild springs Misa and Smith for a 2-on-1. Misa sets Smith up to shoot, but Smith went for another move, ran out of room. Oh man, shoot! All this does lead to another Sharks power play.

4 left: PP1 has no mojo so far tonight. PP2 comes out, except Celebrini stays on for Graf. Smith-Stenberg-Celebrini-Toffoli-Marchment and Orlov-Pohlkamp-Sherwood-Graf-Misa are how they ran it in AM. Makes sense to double-shift Celebrini on PP. Need a goal wherever you can get it.

2 left: Stenberg had whole ice in front of him at 5-on-5 by himself, some F1 pressure but not overwhelmed…and he loses it on a weak backhand pass up the wall. Just having a tough time at 5-on-5 and I wonder if it’s bleeding into his PP confidence.

Credit to the San Jose Sharks, solid game after the Kaprizov goal, outshot Wild 8-3. Need to scare up next goal though.

Period 2

3 in: Hopefully I don’t jinx it, but Askarov looks like a far calmer puckhandler this year. Outwaits F1 Kaprizov, beats the F1 and hits Kesselring.

5 in: Good forechecking work from Dellandrea line. Focus will be on his penalty, fair, but I think he’s been solid otherwise tonight in his role. Faceoff, forecheck, get pucks to his skill wingers.

7 in: Misa backcheck, doesn’t allow Yurov to advance in NZ. Really like.

8 in: Misa up to PP1 over Stenberg, was going to ask Warsofsky about that earlier today, didn’t get to it. He’s earned it. Playing with more confidence than Stenberg right now.

9 in: Marchment looks to the sky. Toffoli set him up in slot, his shot rolls off Trenin’s stick and out.

Misa flies in, takes it for a sec from Brodin on PP. Sharks can’t hold it in, but love that.

San Jose Sharks are playing good hockey. But you have to think, mentally, need that next goal.

Celebrini goal: And they got it! Orlov with the nice find of Celebrini in the slot, Celebrini deflects it off Brodin and in.

Shabanov goal: The Sharks needed a big kill, couldn’t get it. Uphill again. Just brilliant pass from Kaprizov to Shabanov. Kaprizov drew two Sharks to him and put it where Shabanov could get it.

5 left: Graf, if he had eyes in the back of his head, had Marchment on weak side with daylight. Graf made the safe play and out, which I prefer, not the blind pass. Icing though. I wonder if Marchment called for it?

4 left: Celebrini centering Dellandrea’s line, getting the late period double-shift. Nurse slipped a nice stretch pass that Celebrini kicked to himself, big Wallstedt save in slot. Actually, Dellandrea hasn’t played since 5:50 into second. His last shift, I thought, was a pretty good one, did he get banged up? Quick look counts all skaters on the ice or bench.

2 left: But that’s the risk of the stretch. Pohlkamp tries to Gaudette, doesn’t connect, turnover, Wild chance and DZ faceoff.

Good shift by Graf line to close, Kesselring trying to pound shots, Sherwood and Marchment in front. Does San Jose have one more period of good hockey left? Should be proud of effort so far, going toe to toe against one of the best in the West.

Period 3

Dellandrea on the ice to start 3rd period: His last shift was 5:50 into second

1 in: Good job by Graf to keep puck alive versus three Wild on OZ wall. Doesn’t win, but so important, doesn’t lose it clean either. Buys time for rest of forecheck to join. That shift just had a really excellent five-man forecheck shift. Really connected.

Hughes goal: That might do it. You want a stop there, though obviously a good shot from Hughes. Askarov wasn’t set, I don’t know if Misa skating by distracted him. Wild had possession because of a Celebrini turnover on the other side. not blaming Macklin, that was a reasonable low-to-high pass that he was making that was intercepted. Just a statement about how thin the margins are, the San Jose Sharks have played a good game, worthy of being tied right now, but the other side has more difference-makers in Kaprizov and Hughes and Boldy than the Sharks.

9 in: Dellandrea, except the penalty, I think has had a really good game, Stenberg-led rush, but Dellandrea and Toffoli with chances. Of course, he sat for a while, so maybe I’m wrong, but maybe he was banged up, I see more positive than good.

Bogosian goal: When this guy is wiring it, you’re in trouble. First goal and point of the season for Bogosian in his 17th game.
