How to scan a QR code on your phone (and stay safe)

A QR code is a square barcode that stores a link or short text. Your phone can read it in a second, with no extra app on most phones.
On iPhone
Open the Camera app, point it at the code and wait. A banner appears at the top. Tap it to open the link.
On Android
- Open the Camera app and point it at the code. A link or button appears, and you tap it.
- If that does not work, look in Quick Settings for Scan QR code, or use Google Lens (in the Google app).
- Some phones have a built-in scanner in the camera’s modes or settings.
If it will not scan
Hold the phone steady, make sure there is enough light, clean the lens and move a little closer or further away. Do not scan it at an angle.
Link WhatsApp Web
In WhatsApp, look for Linked devices, tap Link a device and scan the QR code shown on the computer screen. Only do this for your own computer. See how to protect your WhatsApp account.
How to spot a risky QR code
- A sticker on top of another QR code, for example on a parking meter or a table.
- A code that takes you to a page asking for your password, card number or OTP.
- A web address that looks wrong: check the preview before you tap.
- A code sent by someone you do not know, or in an unexpected message.
Stay safe
- Read the link preview before you open it.
- Do not enter passwords or card details on a page you reached from a code you do not trust.
- For payments, make sure the name shown matches who you mean to pay.
- If something feels off, close it. More in how to spot phone scams.
Make your own
Many phones and sites can create a QR code for a link. Test it by scanning it with a different phone before you print it.
