The NHL world and fans were stunned to learn that Tampa Bay Lightning superstar Nikita Kucherov has requested a trade. The 2025-2026 Hart Memorial Trophy winner is in the last year of his contract, and extension negotiations aren’t going well.
The Lightning are known to be ruthless in negotiations, and that seems to be the case here. Kucherov is such a dynamic player and would help any team that wants to contend for a Stanley Cup.
Tampa Bay’s general manager Julien BriseBois says they have no intention of dealing the Russian right winger but players are showing they have a ton of power in this league.
Here are three potential landing spots for Kucherov.

San Jose Sharks

Nikita Kucherov doesn’t want to be a part of a rebuild, but the San Jose Sharks would be an intriguing fit. ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reports that Kucherov wants to play with another superstar, and Macklin Celebrini would check that box.
Believe Kucherov has his eyes set on playing with another one of the league’s top superstars and has a few players/teams in mind.
We’ll see what moves the Lightning can, or are willing to, pull off.

Kucherov and Celebrini would be must-see television every night. The Sharks are 7-7-1 to start the year, but they would have to convince the Russian winger that they’re going to contend for a Stanley Cup.
Vegas Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights have shown they’ll do whatever it takes to be in the Stanley Cup hunt. Adding a player like #86 would instantly make them Cup favorites. Adding him to a lineup with Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner would give opposing teams nightmares.

The Golden Knights would have to give up a to get the star player, but if one team is willing to do it, it’s Vegas. Getting Kucherov out of the Eastern Conference would also be a bonus for the Lightning.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The 33-year-old has led the Lightning in scoring with four goals and 14 assists this season. Those numbers would skyrocket if he played alongside players like Auston Matthews and William Nylander. The Toronto Maple Leafs re-tooled their roster, and Kucherov would put them in the contender conversation.

Tampa Bay probably wouldn’t trade Kucherov to an Atlantic Division rival but might be forced to if the price is right. Matthews would be in heaven playing with a playmaker like Kucherov. The Maple Leafs No.1 powerplay unit would be terrifying. Russian netminder Sergei Bobrovsky would be a familiar face as well.
