Jayson Tatum is making history early in the 2026–27 NBA season, matching a rare feat previously accomplished by one of the many Boston Celtics legends, Paul Pierce.

Tatum became the first Celtic since Pierce in 2008 to attempt at least 54 free throws over a four-game span, according to Dick Lipe of NBC Sports Boston.

The milestone highlights how frequently Tatum has put pressure on opposing defenses and found ways to get to the free-throw line. His ability to draw contact has become another important part of his offensive game, complementing his scoring and playmaking responsibilities.

Tatum continued his impressive start against the Orlando Magic on November 1. He finished with 32 points and seven assists, converting 15 of his 17 free-throw attempts to help Boston secure a 108–97 road victory. The win marked the Celtics’ fifth consecutive triumph. Boston’s official game recap also highlighted his free-throw production, noting that he matched Orlando’s entire team in made free throws.

The comparison to Pierce carries added significance in Boston, where the former captain helped lead the franchise to its 17th NBA championship in 2008.

Pierce has also expressed confidence in the current Celtics roster, saying, “I expect this group to be very competitive.” He made the remark on NBC Sports Boston’s Pregame Live with Brian Scalabrine, Eddie House and Tom Giles.

He believes Boston can battle for the Eastern Conference, pointing to the Knicks, 76ers and Pistons as teams that could make the race challenging. Pierce also described the conference as wide open, with no clear-cut favorite.

Tatum is now adding another chapter to the Celtics’ history. If he maintains this level of aggression and production, his early-season performances could become one of the defining stories of Boston’s campaign.
