The hockey world was stunned recently when Tampa Bay Lightning star Nikita Kucherov requested a trade from the team. Kucherov, an impending free agent, has informed the team that he will not re-sign. As a result, he has opened the door for a trade.

Lightning general manager Julien Brisebois shut down any idea of Kucherov being traded. This makes sense, of course. The veteran Tampa winger remains one of the most productive forwards in the league. He is the team’s all-time points leader, a claim he cemented shortly before this trade request leaked.

At the same time, this story is not a new phenomenon for the Lightning. Older hockey fans will remember Martin St. Louis from his playing days. In 2014, he had a falling out with then-general manager Steve Yzerman. This led to Tampa trading him to the New York Rangers.

Of course, the Steven Stamkos situation is fresh in the minds of a lot of hockey fans. Stamkos didn’t have an explicit falling out with Brisebois, who was the general manager at that time. However, it became clear to the former captain that the team was comfortable moving on.

This is now the third time in the last 15 years that Tampa Bay could lose a cornerstone of the franchise. Brisebois may not want to make this trade. But events around the league will make it quite hard to believe it until Kucherov simply plays out his contract.

With a trade now being a real possibility, let’s take a look at three potential landing spots for Nikita Kucherov on the trade market.

Kraken are desperate for top-six scoring

The Seattle Kraken have tried hard to land a superstar over the last year or so. The Kraken nearly landed Jason Robertson over the summer. They made a run at Artemi Panarin last season, as well. Unfortunately, they have come up short.

Landing Kucherov would certainly make them an incredible team. They have the young players the Lightning would ideally want in this sort of deal. And they have two first-round picks to dangle, which a lot of teams can’t say.

The Kraken are currently in a playoff spot at this time. Whether they can maintain this level of play remains to be seen. If they land Kucherov, their chances of maintaining their playoff status become much better.

Sharks could pair Nikita Kucherov with Macklin Celebrini

The San Jose Sharks are just outside the playoff picture at this time. However, San Jose has one of the best players in the world at this time. Macklin Celebrini burst onto the scene last season. He has continued his incredible play this year.

At the same time, he is sort of doing things alone. Last year, he was by far the team’s leading scorer with 115 points. The next closest player to him, Will Smith, had just 59 points. This year, things seem a bit better in terms of scoring depth. But more can be done.

The Sharks have the assets that would allow them to make this trade. In fact, they could make this trade and still have one of the best prospect pipelines in the NHL. If Kucherov is considering a team on the rise, San Jose has to be on the list.

Canadiens are best positioned to win now

The Kraken and Sharks cannot provide Kucherov with an immediate chance to win. At the very least, they cannot guarantee it. The Montreal Canadiens, though, are in a much better position to do so.

The Canadiens made the Eastern Conference Finals in 2026. They came within three games of the Stanley Cup Final. Yes, they were utterly dominated by the Carolina Hurricanes. They lacked the offensive punch to break through the Hurricanes’ defense.

Kucherov would give the Canadiens everything they need. He would give them the reliable, elite scoring that would put them among the best in the East. Would the Lightning want to trade within their division? Ideally, no. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. And that doesn’t mean the fit doesn’t make sense.
