Dodgers Have 2 Intriguing Trade Targets as Marlins Make Infielders Available

By November 5, 2026

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ biggest position of need is second base if they want to upgrade offensively on what they have.

Tommy Edman is one option at second, along with infield prospect Alex Freeland and possibly even Hyeseong Kim.

If the Dodgers want another option, someone who had an impressive 2026 season or a better track record than either Kim or Freeland, the Miami Marlins have a pair of infielders who are reportedly available.

Otto Lopez, shortstop, and Xavier Edwards, second baseman, are two players who, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, may be traded for “a lot” in exchange.

Both Lopez and Edwards have three years of arbitration control, so they are under control until 2030.

The Marlins don’t need either of them urgently, but it is an opportunity for at least the Dodgers to explore. Here is what the pair offers:

Xavier Edwards

Edwards is a multi-positional defender who can play second base and shortstop. His defense declined in 2026 after being above average.

Still, he is a walking specialist, with an 11.4% walk rate; he avoids strikeouts (13.9%) and puts the ball in play, but doesn’t hit it hard.

More importantly, he’s fast and ranks as an elite base-runner, with at least 21 SBs over the last three years.

The Dodgers need speed, and Edwards’s .360 OBP means his speed shows up on the bases.

Otto Lopez

Lopez is likely the more expensive player, given how amazing his 2026 was.

He put up a 5.9 fWAR season, with an above-average hitting season. Lopez slashed .305/.349/.437 with just 11 home runs, but drove in 94 runs, stole 34 bases, and drove in 71 runs.

It was far and away his best offensive year, since he struggled to get much going before.

He is strictly a contact specialist who is a master at putting the ball in play, even if it means a weak walk rate of 5.8%.

However, he also plays elite defense, with three straight years as one of the league’s best infielders.

Lopez can slot in at either second base or shortstop, and he plays them at a high level.

Who should the Dodgers target?

Out of the pair, Edwards makes the most sense, since he is likely to cost a bit less and has a more stable track record.

Lopez has only one year of hitting at the level he produced in 2026, and for what the Marlins may ask, he may need another season of similar production to warrant that many prospects.
