Eagles updated QB depth chart after Joe Milton replaces Tanner McKee

By November 5, 2026

The Philadelphia Eagles have made another significant change at quarterback, naming Joe Milton their starter for Sunday's Week 9 matchup against the New York Giants.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Milton will replace Tanner McKee after Philadelphia lost all three games McKee started. The decision comes just two days after head coach Nick Sirianni publicly committed to McKee, declaring Monday that the Eagles were not making a quarterback change.

Philadelphia enters Sunday with a 2-6 record and six consecutive losses, making the move an important development for an offense searching for answers.

Role Quarterback Status
QB1 Joe Milton III Reported Week 9 starter
QB2 Tanner McKee Benched; expected backup
QB3 Cole Payton Rookie developmental option
Injured reserve Jalen Hurts Out for season

Eagles updated quarterback depth chart

QB1: Joe Milton III

Milton becomes Philadelphia's third starter at quarterback this season after Jalen Hurts and McKee.

The Eagles signed Milton from Dallas' practice squad on Oct. 16, giving the 26-year-old quarterback less than three weeks to prepare for his first start with the organization.

Milton has appeared in five NFL regular-season games, completing 37 of 53 passes for 424 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

His mobility and arm strength provide different offensive possibilities than the Eagles had with McKee.

QB2: Tanner McKee

McKee moves into a reserve role after going 0-3 as Philadelphia's starter.

The former Stanford quarterback has completed 72 of 114 passes for 638 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions during that stretch. McKee struggled to move the offense consistently, particularly in the second half, though injuries and protection issues contributed to Philadelphia's struggles.

He remains an experienced option if Milton struggles or gets injured.

QB3: Cole Payton

Payton remains a developmental option after joining Philadelphia through the 2026 NFL draft. The former North Dakota State quarterback offers athleticism and rushing ability, giving the Eagles another young player to evaluate at the position.

Payton previously served as Philadelphia's emergency third quarterback, and his game-day role could change if Milton becomes the starter.

Injured reserve: Jalen Hurts

Hurts remains unavailable after suffering complications related to blood clots. The Eagles have already lost their franchise quarterback for the remainder of the season, leaving Philadelphia to evaluate alternatives over its final nine games.

What Joe Milton's promotion means for the Eagles

Milton's elevation represents an attempt to change an offense that has averaged just 17.1 points per game and has repeatedly struggled to sustain drives. Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion must develop a game plan that emphasizes Milton's physical strengths without overcomplicating his responsibilities. Philadelphia will also need improved offensive line play, better rushing production and more consistent contributions from its receivers.

The Giants enter Sunday at 4-2-1 and lead the NFC East, making Milton's first assignment difficult.

With the Eagles entering their bye in Week 10, Sunday's performance could influence the organization's quarterback decisions for the remainder of the season.
