PHILADELPHIA — Greetings from the press box at Lincoln Financial Field, where the Philadelphia Eagles will face off against the New York Giants in NFL Week 9 action on Sunday.
Nick Sirianni and the Eagles (2-6) are looking to snap a brutal six-game losing streak.
Meanwhile, John Harbaugh and the Giants (4-2-1) are hoping to extend their lead in the NFC East standings.
This will be an unlikely matchup of two former Michigan quarterbacks: Joe Milton and J.J. McCarthy.
Milton is making his first NFL start after joining the Eagles only a few weeks ago. With Jalen Hurts out for the season and Tanner McKee benched this week, the Eagles will turn to the mobile, cannon-armed Milton for a spark.
The Giants traded for McCarthy after Jaxson Dart went down with a season-ending injury. McCarthy, the Vikings’ 2024 first-round pick, was acquired for just a fifth-round pick. Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio called that “a steal.”
We’ll see if Milton, without DeVonta Smith but with the help of Saquon Barkley, can outplay McCarthy and lead the Eagles to a much-needed win.
Follow along throughout the game for updates from the Linc.
FOURTH QUARTER
9:06 — Giants 16, Eagles 8
The Eagles are still within a score after the Giants had to settle for yet another Dominic Zvada field goal.
Is there any confidence that the Eagles will string together a touchdown drive with a two-point conversion? No.
But they’re not dead yet.
THIRD QUARTER
0:27 — Giants 13, Eagles 8
The offense continues to sputter. That’s four consecutive three-and-outs. The Eagles had 0 net yards in the third quarter. Brutal.
2:25 — Giants 13, Eagles 8
The Eagles missed Zack Baun on that drive. The Giants’ 14-play, 76-yard march ends with a wide-open touchdown pass from Jameis Winston to Isaiah Likely. It looked like Andrew Mukuba was at fault, covering the receiver Quinyon Mitchell already had, leaving Likely all by himself.
The Eagles’ offense needs to do something.
10:47 — Eagles 8, Giants 6
Giants quarterback J.J. McCarthy and Eagles linebacker Zack Baun are heading to the locker room after the two collided head-first on the Giants’ opening drive of the second half.
If McCarthy can’t return to the game, it’ll be Jameis Winston at quarterback for the Giants moving forward.
SECOND QUARTER
0:15 — Eagles 8, Giants 6
That might have been the highlight of the Eagles’ season, which is both sad and cool. Braden Mann just boomed an 86-yard punt to effectively end the half.
It wasn’t the longest punt in franchise history. That belongs to Randall Cunningham and his 91-yard punt in 1989. But what a ridiculous moment from Mann.
5:21 — Eagles 8, Giants 6
Not much to write about since that Eagles touchdown, though Zack Baun came to play. The 2024 All-Pro linebacker got his second sack of the day on the Giants’ last drive.
The Eagles now have four sacks total — as many as they’ve had in their previous four games combined.
FIRST QUARTER
2:09 — Eagles 8, Giants 6
Saquon Barkley finished off a fun drive propelled by Joe Milton with a goal-to-go touchdown burst.
Milton hit Dallas Goedert for a 12-yard gain, scrambled for a 19-yard gain and drew a 30-yard defensive pass interference penalty on a deep shot to Darius Cooper. Makai Lemon was wide open for a touchdown on the throw to Cooper. Under heavy pressure, Milton didn’t see him. But it didn’t matter.
Set up at the Giants’ 3-yard line, Barkley punched it in a few plays later with the help of fullback Willie Lampkin.
Then, the Giants had 12 men on the field for Jake Elliott’s PAT. The Eagles accepted the penalty, went for the two-point conversion from the 1-yard line, and Milton got it — then did a backflip in the end zone in celebration.
5:31 — Giants 6, Eagles 0
Dominic Zvada tacked on another three points with a 49-yard field goal. But not before Jonathan Greenard logged his first sack with the Eagles by leveling an unsuspecting J.J. McCarthy. That’s a confidence-builder for the $98 million star who has underperformed so far.
9:00 — Giants 3, Eagles 0
Welp, that was a rough start. Joe Milton had a false start called on himself before the Eagles’ first snap of the game. Then, third-and-7 pressure in Milton’s face forced an early throw and an incompletion. Three-and-out punt. Brutal.
To top it off, Kelee Ringo was called for unsportsmanlike conduct on the punt for not getting back inbounds as a gunner, costing the Eagles 15 yards. This team just isn’t detailed right now.
10:30 — Giants 3, Eagles 0
The Giants started things off with a 53-yard field goal by Dominic Zvada after a couple of third-down conversions — including a 17-yard completion on third-and-12 — extended their opening drive.
But the Eagles’ defense made a couple splash plays. Jordan Davis had a nice TFL on a rush stop, and Zack Baun ended their drive with his first sack of the season.
We’ll see if that pressure continues.
