The Denver Broncos’ comeback win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday came down to a controversial false start on fourth-and-goal, and plenty of Chiefs fans are still upset about it. One former Broncos star doesn’t want to hear those complaints.
On his podcast this week, former Broncos safety Justin Simmons went off on Chiefs fans who think the call was wrong, accusing the officials of “cheating” for Kansas City throughout the Patrick Mahomes era.
The False Start
The Chiefs led 24-13 early in the fourth quarter, but Bo Nix and the Broncos rallied. A Nix touchdown pass to Nate Adkins and a two-point conversion to Jaylen Waddle cut the lead to 24-21, and after Harrison Butker missed a 54-yard field goal, Jonah Coleman scored on a 5-yard run to put Denver up 28-24.
Mahomes then drove the Chiefs to the Denver 1-yard line in the final minute. On fourth-and-goal, he found Rashee Rice for what looked like the game-winning touchdown, but right tackle Jaylon Moore was flagged for a false start, wiping out the score.
On the replay from the 6, Malcolm Roach and Nik Bonitto sacked Mahomes to seal the win. The victory moved the Broncos to 6-2 and into first place in the AFC West, a half-game ahead of the Chiefs.
Mahomes seemed surprised by the flag after the game. He said that in big moments, “the little stuff doesn’t get called like that,” according to the Associated Press.
His wife, Brittany Mahomes, was much more blunt. In a post on Instagram, she ripped the officials for the call.
“You can’t tell me you call that on a game winning TD, oh wait yeah I can cause it’s us,” Brittany wrote, via Jomboy Media. “That was the weakest call I have ever seen, you can’t tell me otherwise.”
‘Y’all been cheating’
Simmons, who spent eight seasons with the Broncos, addressed the backlash on The Last Line, the DNVR Sports podcast he hosts with former teammate Kareem Jackson.
“I seen it all on social media and I already got beef with Chiefs fans anyway. I don’t like y’all. Y’all don’t like me. That’s cool,” Simmons said, on the podcast.
“Y’all been cheating the whole time y’all had Patrick Mahomes! Refs been cheating!” Simmons said.
“My rant is at the Chiefs fans that are delusional enough to think that that was not a false start,” he continued. “It was a false start. Y’all lost, and y’all lost at the 1-yard line.”
Simmons even questioned what fans would consider a false start if that wasn’t one.
“If that’s not a false start, then what is?” he asked.
Needless to say, Simmons is enjoying the Broncos’ newfound spot atop the AFC West.
