What a difference a couple of weeks can make in terms of how a player is viewed by a fan base. Earlier in October, Nebraska punter Archie Wilson was struggling at times. He was showing that he either had a weak leg or that the coaches were asking him not to out kick his coverage.
Well after a few poor punts there were many on X who voiced their displeasure. Here are a few samples of what can be found from earlier in the month.
Well fast forward to the today and it was announced that Archie Wilson was named to the Ray Guy Award Midseason Watch List. The Ray Guy Award goes to the best punter in the country.
Not only did he make the watch list but he was named the Ray Guy Punter of the Week after averaging 49.8 net yards per punt. He placed four punts inside the Washington 20-yard line. Every punt went at least 40 yards and none of the kicks were returned. He had a 59 yard punt and a 60 yard punt.
This is quite the turnaround for the sophomore from Australia.
Archie Wilson is a great illustration of why you cannot listen to the emotional reactions from fans. This goes for both the good times and the bad times.
Wilson was having some bad times earlier in the month, including when he bent down to catch a low snap and let his knee hit the ground in the game against Oregon. So he has earned some of that criticism.
But it says a lot about Archie Wilson that he was able to battle back.
Of his 31 punts this season, only four have been returned. That is why you have to wait for the season to play out.
