Florida State soccer ended its regular season slate with a 2-1 loss to Virginia Tech on Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
Despite the result, the Seminoles' ACC tournament hopes were decided by results elsewhere. Regardless of the loss to Virginia Tech, FSU was locked into the No. 4 seed due to Duke and Virginia drawing and Louisville falling to North Carolina.
It will be the first game between the Cavaliers and Seminoles this season. It is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 8 at Seminole Soccer Complex, at 8 p.m.
The Hokies led early thanks to an opportunistic counterattack, finished off by Anna Weir. She carried the ball forward and drove from midfield toward the FSU backline, and after laying it off for nearby Eliana Salama, she received a chipped ball back that she lobbed over Kate Ockene in goal.
Despite chances from Wrianna Hudson, who headed a shot over the bar, and Joelle Jung, whose volleyed effort was saved, FSU trailed 1-0 at halftime with an 11-4 shot advantage.
The response out of the break didn't take long, however, as Ryder Ajeto got the ball on the left wing a minute into the half. After she drove at her defender and beat her one-on-one, she played a ball to the open foot of Jung, who tapped home the equalizer in the 47th minute.
FSU remained on the front foot and dominated much of the proceedings in the second half. Hudson again popped up with a chance, this time controlling a ball out of the air and having her shot crash off the crossbar in the 59th minute.
The Hokies had a few moments on the counterattack that stressed the backline. The best chance came in the 72nd minute when Weir broke free and seemingly had a one-on-one with Ockene; however, Janet Okeke flew back into the play and blocked the shot, sending it out for a corner kick.
Virginia Tech remained a threat on the counter, and it paid off in the 82nd minute when Salama broke forward and dribbled her way into the box. Her right-footed shot kissed off the post and past Ockene to put the Hokies ahead 2-1.
