The New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils served up one of the more surprising scraps of the NHL season on Saturday night, as Islanders phenom Matthew Schaefer and Devils defenseman Luke Hughes got into it at UBS Arena.
The unexpected throwdown came in the second period, with the Islanders leading 4-2. Schaefer had taken Hughes down earlier in the game, and tempers eventually boiled over between two of the league’s brightest young blueliners. SportsCenter summed up the reaction perfectly on X, calling it “not the matchup we expected to see.”

It was a rare sight for both players. Neither Schaefer nor Hughes has a fight on his NHL record, making the heated exchange between the two skilled, puck-moving defensemen all the more stunning.
Schaefer, the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, had already made his presence felt on the scoresheet, scoring his fifth goal of the season in the first period to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead.
But it was Hughes who got the last laugh. The Devils stormed back in the third period, as Luke Evangelista cut the deficit to one at 6:08 and Dougie Hamilton tied the game on a power play with 6:18 left in regulation.
Luke Hughes was flying in overtime, with Schaefer struggling to match him stride for stride, according to Pucks and Pitchforks. Eventually, his brother Jack Hughes finished off a two-on-one rush with a shot past Ilya Sorokin’s blocker with 3:42 remaining to give New Jersey a 5-4 win. It was Jack’s third overtime goal of the season.
Sorokin was outstanding in the loss, turning aside 45 shots, but the Islanders could not hold on. Anthony Duclair, Simon Holmstrom and Victor Eklund also scored for New York, while Bo Horvat chipped in two assists. Evan Rodrigues and Declan Chisholm had the other goals for New Jersey, and Jake Allen made 19 saves.
The win extended the Devils’ winning streak to four games, while the Islanders dropped their third straight. It was a far cry from the teams’ first meeting of the season, when New York blew out New Jersey 6-0 on Oct. 3.
With the rivalry clearly heating up, the next Islanders-Devils clash could bring even more fireworks.
