Victor Wembanyama had to put the San Antonio Spurs on his back on Wednesday, as he recorded a career-high 52 points to go along with 24 rebounds and eight blocks to power them to a 112-111 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The Spurs needed every bit of Wembanyama’s contributions, as the entire team simply did not bring it on offense tonight.
The Spurs team, outside of Wembanyama made just 21 of their 67 field-goal attempts, which is “good” for a 31.3% clip. But in the end, the team showed up in support of Wembanyama when it mattered.
In particular, head coach Mitch Johnson praised De’Aaron Fox for the way he defended Kyrie Irving on the final possession of the game to seal the win for San Antonio — giving his effort an A+ grade, as per Jeff Garcia of Spurs In Focus.

With Cooper Flagg in the middle of a rough shooting night (he finished with just seven made field-goals on 19 attempts), the Mavericks turned to Irving to try and win the game for them in the dying embers with the Spurs up by just one. However, Fox kept in step with Irving, didn’t give him an inch of space, and was all up in his grill when the Mavericks star shot the ball — forcing the attempt to go wide left.

Fox also made some crucial plays in the clutch on offense. He was dropping dimes for Wembanyama, which made the game somewhat easier for the Spurs’ number one option on offense.
There were many who called for the Spurs to try and trade Fox this past offseason after his brutal showing in the 2026 NBA Finals. But his veteran presence helps calm down this squad, and at his best, he provides the Spurs with the kind of downhill burst and defensive effort they need from their floor general.
On the season, Fox is averaging 15.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 6.1 assists in eight games.
