Notre Dame football is dealing with its own injuries, and on Wednesday it looks like Miami could be dealing with the same as well.
The Irish have already ruled out linebacker Drayk Bowen, safety Brauntae Johnson hasn’t healed enough to return to the field and defensive lineman Francis Brewu and Jason Onye has been listed as questionable against the Hurricanes. However, Miami could be without or at least a slowed down Malachi Toney.
According to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the star Hurricane wide receiver is “dealing with an injured ankle and his status for Saturday’s game against Notre Dame is uncertain.” This is a massive development for the Irish, as with the College Football Playoff releasing its first ranking of the year, now know that they have to beat Miami to stay in good shape to be inside the top-12.
Toney has been fantastic this fall, already with 1,027 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s been the go-to target for quarterback Darian Mensah, has his 73 receptions are 45 more than his No. 2 option, Cooper Barkate.
If Toney is unavailable or even if the try’s to play through, it is great news for Notre Dame’s chances of upsetting the No. 1 team in the country.
