WNBA superstar Paige Bueckers has never been shy about speaking up on issues beyond basketball. After Tuesday’s midterm elections, she made her feelings about the results clear.
Democrats won control of both the House and Senate, and they pulled off some major upsets in Texas, where Bueckers plays, and it’s safe to say that she was happy about the results.
Paige Bueckers celebrates Democrats’ wins
On Wednesday morning, Bueckers took to her Instagram Story to react to the election results, according to The Spun. She posted a blue heart emoji and shared support for two Texas Democrats who won major races on Tuesday.
James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race, while Gina Hinojosa took down Gov. Greg Abbott in the governor’s race. Bueckers shared Talarico’s first post after his victory.
“First stop post-win: Whataburger,” Talarico wrote.
Talarico’s win was one of the biggest upsets of the night. Elon Musk poured more than $150 million into a Senate GOP super PAC that funded ads supporting Paxton.
Bueckers, who grew up in Minnesota, also saw her home state send Democrat Peggy Flanagan to the Senate over former NBC sideline reporter Michele Tafoya.
A different message from Sophie Cunningham
Bueckers has spoken out on social issues throughout her career. In July, she said the WNBA “was built on a lot of Black women” while calling for more Black women to be hired as head coaches.
“I grew up with a lot of prominent Black women in my life that were very important to me,” Bueckers said at the time.
Sophie Cunningham took a very different approach on Wednesday. The Fever guard reposted a message from podcaster Andy Frisella to her Instagram Story, as captured by Mark J. Burns of Sport & State.
“Politics is downstream of culture,” the post read. “A culture of personal excellence is the foundation of a great country. There is no election, politician, policy or law that can substitute for that.”
Cunningham has drawn heavy criticism over the last few months for her comments on transgender athletes, which were praised by the White House and conservative figures.
Bueckers, meanwhile, seemed pretty happy with how the night turned out.
