The government of Pakistan has introduced 45 new UN-backed safety standards for cars. This major update operates as part of the country’s new auto policy. Consequently, locally manufactured and used vehicles will soon meet strict international safety requirements.
Adviser to the Prime Minister for Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, revealed these details on Saturday. He formally made the announcement during a press conference in Islamabad alongside Information Minister Attaullah Tarar. Specifically, Khan explained that the government incorporated these 45 additional standards to align directly with the United Nations’ WP.29 code.
As a result, this framework aims to drastically upgrade the local auto industry. Furthermore, Khan expressed high confidence in the new codes. He stated:
When our vehicles will go through these safety codes, they will be considered the world’s safest vehicles, both manufactured and used.
Six Pillars of the New Auto Policy
Interestingly, vehicle safety represents just one segment of a much broader strategy. In fact, safety forms just one of the six fundamental pillars of the new auto policy. Besides enforcing strict safety rules, the government heavily focuses on five other crucial areas.
Therefore, the complete framework targets the following primary objectives:
| Policy Pillar | Key Focus Area |
| Pillar 1 | Fulfilling new vehicle safety requirements |
| Pillar 2 | Making vehicles more affordable |
| Pillar 3 | Promoting exports |
| Pillar 4 | Increasing localization |
| Pillar 5 | Encouraging electric vehicle adoption |
| Pillar 6 | Ensuring transparency |
Ultimately, this comprehensive policy aims to stabilize the auto sector. Moreover, it actively promotes the rapid adoption of electric vehicles while completely ensuring industry transparency.
