By The Kansas City Chiefs are rumored to be on the lookout for a wide receiver ahead of the NFL trade deadline. They continue to be linked to the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Brian Thomas Jr., who could be Patrick Mahomes’ new wideout.
Thomas is in his third NFL season. He entered the league as the No. 23 overall pick in 2024 out of LSU. The Louisiana native finished his rookie campaign with 87 receptions for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning Pro Bowl honors. He saw action in 14 games last year and experienced a slight dip in his numbers. Thomas recorded 48 receptions for 707 yards and two touchdowns, including one in the Wild Card Round loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Meanwhile, Kansas City has lost back-to-back games after starting the season 5-0. They are coming off a 28-24 defeat to the Denver Broncos in Week 9 despite Mahomes’ strong performance. He completed 30-of-41 passes for 321 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Patrick Mahomes And the Chiefs Could Trade For Brian Thomas Jr.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday that the Chiefs are “intrigued” by Thomas. Several analysts consider the wide receiver position as the team’s “weak spot” despite having a high-octane offense led by Patrick Mahomes.
“Thomas played only 19 snaps during Thursday night’s victory in Baltimore and did not catch a pass. The Kansas City Chiefs have continued to be intrigued by Thomas,” Schefter and Rapoport wrote.
The team has Xavier Worthy as its WR1. However, they don’t have depth behind him and also signed Jacob De Jesus to the practice squad recently. He’ll likely serve as an insurance if the Chiefs fail to add another wideout. Thomas fits their need as he is young and has shown glimpses of his true potential. But the front office still a lot of maneuvering and calls to make before potentially landing him.
