PLASA Show has announced that camera manufacturer RED will join The PLASA Lab, captured by RED, a new lighting feature debuting at Olympia London from 6-8 September.
The PLASA Lab lets lighting professionals and students compare fixtures side by side in a real-world stage setting, with no branding or sales pitches. RED will use its cinema camera technology, including a Cine-Broadcast setup and a traditional cinematic rig, to capture the lighting displays inside the dedicated space in Olympia’s West Hall.
Peter Heath, PLASA MD, said: “There’s a natural connection between what we’re trying to achieve with The PLASA Lab and what RED does. The whole experience is about looking more closely at light, how fixtures behave, the subtleties between them, and what those differences mean creatively and technically. Having RED come on board gives us the opportunity to capture that in a completely different way and create a lasting record of a feature that is fundamentally designed to be experienced live.”
Each one-hour demonstration, facilitated by lighting professional James Simpson, will run comparable fixtures through pre-programmed lighting states with product identities hidden until the end, covering five categories: High Output Spot, Low Output Spot, Beam, Big Wash and Small Wash. After each reveal, visitors can test individual fixtures themselves and speak to the manufacturers involved.
RED’s global shutter is designed to capture dynamic lighting and pyrotechnics without the strobing or motion blur that can affect cameras with rolling shutters, and has recently been used by touring production companies including Fuse and Epic Cinema. Technical support at the show will come from CVP, RED’s UK partner.
Andy Newham, head of sales EMEA at RED Digital Cinema, said: “PLASA provides the perfect opportunity for RED to connect with the UK live events and touring community. Participating in The PLASA Lab allows us to demonstrate how our cameras capture the artist’s performance in true cinematic style, helping creative teams capture every event with the quality, flexibility and reliability needed to deliver an exceptional experience for their audiences.”
