There are nights when San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama makes the game of basketball look so easy. Wednesday night is one of those nights. In a matchup against the Dallas Mavericks, Wembanyama had his way in the first half — racking up insane stats that have him making history.
Through the first 24 minutes of game time, Wembanyama put up an eye-popping 29 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks to go along with two assists and two steals. In so doing, the Spurs star became just the first player in NBA history to record at least 25 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks in a single half, as per Jordan Howenstine of Spurs PR.
In a matchup between two of the most talented first-overall picks in the past five seasons, Wembanyama is showing that he is miles ahead of Cooper Flagg. The Spurs star simply had his way with the Mavericks, and San Antonio held a 17-point lead heading into the halftime interval as a result of this domination.

If Wembanyama were to end the game with the stat line he put up in the first half on Wednesday, that would already be a good game for him. But he has an entire half to do more damage against the Mavs, and it will be interesting to monitor how much more eye-popping his stats on the night could be.
It’s not like the Mavericks have poor big-men defenders on their roster. They have Daniel Gafford, who is a respectable paint protector, while Flagg and PJ Washington are also stout defenders in their own right.
There seems to be something with the Mavericks that brings the best out of Wembanyama. Last season, he had 40 points in the Spurs’ season-opening win in Dallas, and he averaged 31.3 points courtesy of two 40-point outings against the Mavs. Perhaps Wembanyama is well and truly leaning into that Texas rivalry.
