Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert hasn’t looked like himself this season, currently leading the league in interceptions while his team sits at the bottom of the NFL with an 0-7 record.

Despite his struggles this season, though, Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. had good things to say about Herbert ahead of their matchup on Sunday.

“He’s still a really great quarterback in this league,” Anderson said. “You talk about a big guy who has a big arm, that can run around, that can throw the ball deep, makes a lot of plays with his legs. He’s still a very respectable player in this league, and we have a ton of respect for him

“…Herbert, man he’s playing out of his mind.”

While Herbert has definitely been a top quarterback in the league over the past couple of years, his numbers this year don’t reflect his quality. He has the highest interception rate of his career this year at 4.7%, and is averaging fewer than 200 yards in the air for the first time in his career. Additionally, his seven total fumbles are the most in the NFL this year—though he only lost two of them.

His team as a whole has lost seven fumbles, though, and their 17 total turnovers are the most in the league.

Is Justin Herbert the Only Problem With the Chargers?

While Herbert’s play hasn’t been the most encouraging this season, the run game hasn’t performed especially well this season either. The Chargers have scored just four rushing touchdowns on the year, ranking 26th in the league, and their 4.0 yards per carry ranks 21st.

Similarly to Herbert, though, Anderson complimented the Chargers’ running back corps amid their struggles.

“They have a really great, solid O line as well and some really good running backs that can get downhill, that can hit the perimeter, so this’ll be a good challenge for us,” Anderson said.

The defense is performing fairly well against passes, but has allowed 11 rush touchdowns, the third-most in the NFL this year.

With their collective struggles, the Chargers have put themselves in a big hole to start the year, and they’ll have to be perfect going forward if they’re to even have a chance at playing at the end of January. A win over the Texans is key for building momentum, and they’ll look to do just that in Sunday’s game at 1:05 p.m. PT.
