Lisbon is preparing to welcome more than 70,000 technology executives, entrepreneurs, investors and policymakers as Web Summit 2026 opens today (Monday, November 9).

Artificial intelligence, humanoid robotics, digital sovereignty and the future of European technology will dominate the four-day event, which marks a decade since the international technology conference moved to the Portuguese capital.

A global technology gathering

Web Summit 2026 officially opens on Monday evening at Lisbon’s MEO Arena, launching four days of discussions on the technologies reshaping business, investment and society.

The event, running from 9 to 12 November at the MEO Arena and the neighbouring FIL exhibition centre in Parque das Nações, is expected to attract more than 70,000 participants from across the world.

Monday’s opening ceremony is scheduled for 6pm to 8pm on the main Centre Stage, followed by the first Night Summit networking event.

The main conference programme, startup exhibitions and investor meetings begin on Tuesday, November 10.

Artificial intelligence dominates the agenda

Artificial intelligence will be the defining subject of this year’s conference, with particular attention paid to its transition from software applications into physical machines.

Humanoid robots, autonomous AI agents, cybersecurity and the impact of automation on employment are among the subjects expected to attract considerable interest.

The growing importance of so-called physical AI, which combines intelligent software with machines capable of operating independently in real-world environments, represents a significant development beyond conventional chatbots.

Discussions will also examine whether the enormous investments being made in artificial intelligence can generate sustainable commercial returns.

Europe’s technological independence

Another important theme will be Europe’s ability to compete with the United States and China in developing advanced technologies.

Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for technological sovereignty, security and democracy, is among the prominent policymakers scheduled to participate.

The wider speaker line-up includes executives from international technology companies, investors and entrepreneurs discussing the commercial opportunities and regulatory challenges facing Europe’s digital economy.

Apple will also be represented by Sébastien Gros, its director of government affairs for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Opportunities for Portuguese startups

For Portugal, Web Summit represents an opportunity to strengthen Lisbon’s position as an international technology and entrepreneurship centre.

The conference provides Portuguese startups with access to venture capital investors, multinational companies and potential commercial partners.

International participation will also be substantial. Italy, for example, is bringing 41 innovative startups and SMEs through a delegation organised by its trade promotion agency.

Beyond the conference itself, Lisbon’s hospitality, tourism and services sectors are expected to benefit from the influx of international visitors.

A decade of Web Summit in Lisbon

Since moving from Dublin in 2016, Web Summit has become one of Portugal’s most internationally recognised business events.
Its continued presence has helped promote Lisbon as a destination for technology investment, entrepreneurship and international business networking.

Monday’s opening ceremony will set the tone for discussions extending beyond technological innovation to the economic and political consequences of increasingly powerful digital systems.

For Portugal, the challenge will be turning the international attention generated by Web Summit into lasting investment, skilled employment and opportunities for its expanding technology sector.
