The final week of the regular season has arrived.
Most playoff spots have been determined. What remains, mostly, is postseason seeding. However, in addition to the Express-News Game of the Week – the Frontier Bowl between McCollum and Harlandale – Brennan and Harlan will determine district championship hardware.
Here's a look at the other top games in Week 11.
Brennan vs. Harlan
7:30 p.m. Friday, Farris Stadium
Brennan and Harlan playing for a district championship is inevitable. The No. 3 Bears and No. 9 Hawks are tied for first in District 29-6A. Like the previous three seasons, the winner of this game will determine the league champion.
Harlan is the reigning district champion and also won the title in 2023. Brennan defeated Harlan to win the 2024 championship. The Bears also won three straight district titles from 2020-22, though those were not de facto title games against Harlan. The last time Brennan lost a district game to a team beside Harlan was in 2019 (42-28 against O'Connor). The last time Harlan lost a district game aside from Brennan was 2022 (24-14 against O'Connor).
Sotomayor vs O'Connor
7:30 p.m. Friday, Gustafson Stadium
While Brennan and Harlan battle for the District 29-6A championship, Sotomayor can clear up the playoff picture in District 29-6A with a victory against O'Connor.
Sotomayor occupies the third place spot in district with a 5-2 league mark. Warren, which concluded its regular season last week, sits fourth at 5-3. O'Connor is fifth at 4-3. Warren and Sotomayor get into the playoffs with an O'Connor loss. However, if O'Connor defeats Sotomayor that would cause a three-way tie for two spots. According to the district tiebreaker rules for points, O'Connor would need to defeat Sotomayor by 18 points to make the postseason.
Churchill vs. Roosevelt
7:30 p.m. Friday, Heroes Stadium
This isn't exactly a win-and-in for both teams, but it can be. Johnson, Reagan and Brandeis have locked up postseason spots in District 28-6A, leaving a battle for the final one.
Churchill (3-6 overall) sits in fourth place at 3-3 in district and controls its fate. A victory against Roosevelt, and the Chargers are in. That's the simplest route. But, a Chargers loss could trigger tiebreakers. Roosevelt, Madison and Clark are tied for fifth at 2-4. Roosevelt can get into the postseason if it defeats Churchill and Madison loses against area No. 1, state-ranked No. 6 and undefeated Johnson (9-0) and Clark loses against Reagan. Both those games are on Thursday, so Churchill and Roosevelt should know exactly what's at stake before they kick off Friday.
Kerrville Tivy at Fredericksburg
7:30 p.m. Friday
Tivy was cruising along, scoring points at a ridiculous pace before the Antlers ran into Canyon Lake last week and suffered a 53-50 loss. For those who love football drama, it was the best case scenario.
Because of that result, there is a three-way tie for first in District 13-4A-I with Tivy, Canyon Lake and Fredericksburg all 5-1 in league play. The winner of the Tivy-Fredericksburg game gets at least a share of the district championship. Canyon Lake can nab a share with a win against Austin LBJ.
