DANBURY – At the beginning of the 2026 boys soccer season, Weston coach Thomas Guardado knew his team had a chance of turning a championship season into a multi-year run.
The Trojans had dethroned Bethel in the 2025 SWC championship, and looked to be the favorite in the conference until New Milford, led by second-year head coach Steven Carneiro, upset Weston in the regular season.
So when Weston had the chance to defend its conference title on Sunday at Western Connecticut State University, against the only team it had lost to in the regular season, the Trojans capitalized, dominating New Milford in a 4-0 victory.
"I am super happy for the boys, this is a really special group of kids and it helps that they are all seniors who have been playing together since they were five years old," Guardado said. "I have to give credit to New Milford. Steve is an incredible coach, that program was in shambles and he has really turned it around. I have to give credit where it is due, but I have to be honest, there was never a doubt tonight. It is one of those teams where you know what you have. We are a playoff team."
Weston got out to an early lead within the first 10 minutes thanks to a penalty kick scored by Constantine Joannides. Weston extended its lead in the final minutes of the half as Mads Leary assisted a Kacper Bos goal.
Leary would score a goal of his own to open the second half and Maks Moffley scored after to put the game well out of reach.
"I am feeling great, we had lost to them earlier in the season 4-2 and it was our only loss," Weston senior captain Kyle Schiffer said. "It really stung, but coming back here and being able to take it all home, it means so much to us."
Shiffer was named the tournament MVP after leading a defense that did not allow a goal in the tournament. The championship game was the first time this season that New Milford had been shut out.
"This was the expectation, go back-to-back," Schiffer said. "(Earning MVP) means so much to me. I was able to score a goal this playoffs, and I am just so happy that I can help our team win the SWC."
Weston, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, outscored its opponents 10-0 over the three games.
"This season has definitely been a memorable one, I am going to miss these seniors," Guardado said. "We are moving on to states now, and I hope we have success there. If we keep up the rhythm, I think we will have success."
Weston is the No. 2 seed in the CIAC's unofficial Class M playoff rankings, while New Milford is ranked as the top seed in Class L. Official CIAC pairings are expected to be released Tuesday.

Quotable
"Losing to them the first time really woke us up. We realized we weren't invincible, and after that it just clicked. We are putting 110% into every game, day in and day out, every practice and we knew we were a different team the second time we played them." – Kyle Schiffer, Weston.
