Google Lens searches using a picture instead of words. Point it at something, and it shows matching results.

How to open it

• Android: open the Google app and tap the camera icon in the search bar, or open Google Photos and tap Lens under a photo. Many cameras and the Chrome browser also have a Lens option.
• iPhone: open the Google app and tap the camera icon, or use Google Photos. In Chrome, long press an image and look for Search with Google Lens.
• On a computer: in Chrome, right-click an image and look for Search with Google Lens.

You may need to allow camera access the first time.

What it can do

1. Copy text. Point at a page, sign or document and choose Text. Select the words and copy them.
2. Translate. Choose Translate to read a menu or sign in another language.
3. Identify. Plants, animals, landmarks and some products.
4. Shop. Search for similar-looking items. Results can include sellers, so check how to check if a mobile phone is original before buying a phone from any link.
5. Homework. Scan a question and look for an explanation. Check the answer yourself.

Tips for better results

• Good light and a steady hand.
• Fill the frame with the object and tap it.
• Crop the photo to just the item.
• If the result is wrong, try another angle.

Privacy

Pictures you search with are sent to Google. Do not scan documents with personal details such as ID numbers or bank statements. Be careful about links from scanned codes. See how to spot phone scams.
