Virginia Tech at SMU
7 p.m., ESPN (Friday)

This game should be high in entertainment value as a nice appetizer before Saturday’s blockbuster slate of games. The Hokies bounced back with wins over Georgia Tech and Clemson after nearly having their season derailed by consecutive losses. SMU is coming off a stunning loss to Syracuse on Saturday while Virginia Tech had the weekend off – although James Franklin’s teams haven’t always been at their best the week after the bye during his time in State College. The winner will get back into the rankings and keep their ACC hopes alive, so there will be plenty on the line on Friday night.
Prediction: SMU-33, Virginia Tech-28

(#9)BYU at (#3)Utah
Noon, ABC

This is shaping up to be the biggest chapter in the Holy War, one of the nation’s fiercest and most underappreciated rivalries. This game will have extra juice with both teams coming in the top 10, with a victory giving them a major bost toward a playoff trip. BYU emptied their playbook in a thrilling victory over Notre Dame – can they do it again on the road against the undefeated Utes?
Prediction: Utah-24, BYU-23

(#7)Texas at (#18)Missouri
Noon, ESPN

Texas has a championship-level defense that is the clear strength of the team. Arch Manning and the boys will need to do their share against Mizzou, a team that has a more complete offense this season and is always a tough out. Both teams come in with two losses, so whoever comes up short will have a murky playoff picture moving forward.
Prediction: Missouri-20, Texas-17

(#5)Alabama at (#14)LSU
3:30 p.m., ABC

The biggest shock of the first playoff rankings was the Tide all the way up at #5. That conversation should die down this week – lose to LSU and it’s a moot point, beat the Tigers and the resume is much more aligned with the ranking. ‘Bama has been dealing with injuries, especially on the offensive line, while LSU is feeling the heat of oversized in the face of their potential third loss. This series has consistently delivered over the last couple decades, and this year should be no different.
Prediction: Alabama-34, LSU-30

(#6)Kentucky at (#13)Tennessee
6:15 p.m., ESPN

The Wildcats could be the story of the year if they keep winning. That will be a tall order this week, as they head into enemy territory to square off against one of the best defenses in the nation. Similar to BYU-Utah, this already intense rivalry has extra appeal with both teams looking to stay in championship contention.
Prediction: Tennessee-21, Kentucky-17

(#1)Miami at (#11)Notre Dame
7:30 p.m., NBC

Could this be a playoff elimination game for the Irish? They likely will not have any ranked wins, or anything to impress the committee really, if they drop this one. Notre Dame has several key injuries to its defense, but they will no longer have to worry about containing all-world, do-everything Malachi Toney, who is out after getting injured in practice earlier this week. Talk about poor timing. With Toney as the focal point of the offense, we’ll see which other playmakers can step up for the ‘Canes. The latest version of Catholics vs. Convicts should be another doozy.
Prediction: Miami-28, Notre Dame-27

(#2)Georgia at (#10)Ole Miss
7:30 p.m., ABC

How crowded is the week 10 schedule? A top-10 battle and rematch of last year’s playoff quarterfinals is almost an afterthought. However, it could be the most entertaining and meaningful game of the day. This has the chance to be an outstanding back-and-forth battle late into the game. Trinidad Chambliss is an absolute magician and can carry the Ole Miss offense on his back. While Gunnar Stockton is not quite at that level, he is always at his best when the game is on the line.
Prediction: Georgia-30, Ole Miss-28
